Even after more than 40 years of band history, The Cure still show no signs of fatigue. The British band proved this most recently at their impressive headlining shows in summer 2019. Founded in 1977 by classmates Robert Smith, Lol Tolhurst, Michael Dempsey and Porl Thompson under the name Malice, the band subsequently renamed themselves Easy Cure and, after guitarist Thompson split up, The Cure. Their first official single under a record label, ‘Killing an Arab’, was released in 1979. The Cure changed their outward appearance quite early on, with highly tousled hair, make-up, frilly shirts and black clothes characterising the band's image from then on. With ‘Seventeen Seconds’ from 1980 and ‘Faith’, released a year later, The Cure created two of their greatest masterpieces to date. After the band released the dark gothic album ‘Pornography’ in 1983, the Brits also tried their hand at catchy pop songs, such as ‘Let's Go to Bed’, ‘The Walk’ and ‘The Lovecats’. The Cure have now released 13 studio albums that oscillate between punk, new wave, gothic and rock. In their career, The Cure have been honoured with various awards such as the prestigious Ivor Nello Award, and in 2019 the British band were inducted into the ‘Rock'n'Roll of Fame’.
Since their formation, The Cure have been characterised by constant member changes. Only frontman Robert Smith has been with the band from the beginning.
