After guitarist Rudolf Schenker had already founded a school band with drummer Wolfgang Dziony in 1965, it was not until 1969 that a serious band was formed with the new additions Michael Schenker and Klaus Meine, which first achieved regional fame under the name Scorpions. A short time later, the hard rock band won an up-and-coming talent competition, followed by the debut album ‘Lonesome Crow’ in 1972. In the following years, the Scorpions managed to expand and consolidate their reputation - in 1975 they even accompanied KISS on their tour of Europe. In the same year, the third album ‘In Trance’ was released, which triggered a great deal of hype around the band, especially in Japan. But the Hanoverians were also popular in the USA and played as support acts for groups such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi.
In 1981, singer Klaus Meine lost his voice during a world tour, but thanks to vocal therapy and two vocal cord operations, he regained it - for some fans and critics even better than ever. In 1984, the Scorpions returned to the upper ranks of the charts with the album ‘Love at First Sting’. Five years later, Meines' composition “Wind Of Change”, which appeared on the eleventh album “Crazy World”, mutated into the anthem of the fall of the Berlin Wall, remained number one in the charts for weeks and was also voted the most successful track of 1991. In the 90s, the Scorpions increasingly turned away from their wild sounds and focussed on rock ballads instead. Despite their musical reorientation, the band headlined numerous festivals and always played to sold-out venues. In the new millennium, the group pursued projects such as the classical and rock crossover album ‘Moment Of Glory’ and the unplugged album ‘Acoustica’. With records such as ‘Unbreakable’, ‘Humanity Hour I’, ‘Sting in the Tail’ and the LP ‘Return to Forever’, released in 2015 to mark the band's 50th anniversary, the Scorpions continued to attract attention over the years. After a few personnel changes, the band currently consists of initiator Rudolf Schenker, Klaus Meine, Matthias Jabs, Paweł Mąciwoda and Mikkey Dee. Although the Scorpions are now among the oldies of the German music scene, their songs are still regulars on radio station playlists today. Even after more than 50 years of band history, there is no end in sight for the Scorpions - apart from a disbandment announced in 2013, which was quickly withdrawn.
